Guiting Power
lies about 7 miles west of Bourton-on-the-Water, on a minor road to Winchcombe. |
|
| Approaching
from the West / South West via Andoversford
Reach Andoversford either via the A40 through Cheltenham, or from the M5 at Junction 11A. At the main traffic lights on the A40 at Andoversford, turn onto the A436 - sigposted Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. The A436 climbs a long hill and then flattens out. Ignore several lanes on the left signposted for Hawling. After the last of these the A436 bends sharply rightwards, and right on the bend there is a left turn onto the B4068. Turn onto the B4068 (signposted Naunton and Slaughters). After a mile and a half take a left turn into a lane, signposted Guiting Power. The lane is narrow in places, and passing places are available should a large vehicle be met. Ignore two lanes joining from the right. After a mile Guiting's Parish Church comes clearly into view on your left, with the large gates of Guiting Grange on the right. Turn left here, clearly signposted to Guiting Power and Winchombe - the lane brings you very quickly into the village. Approaching from the East via Stow-on-the-Wold When approaching Stow-on-the-Wold from any direction you will arrive at a traffic-light controlled cross roads on the A429 (Fosse Way), with the Unicorn Inn standing on one corner. The B4068 is opposite the Unicorn, signposted Naunton. Follow the B4068 for 6 miles, as it drops into and climbs out of three small valleys (containing the settlements of Lower Swell, Eyford and Naunton). Towards the top of the third hill you will pass Naunton Downs Golf Course well signed on your left. Slow down at the next buildings that appear on the road-side - there is a multiple junction here that needs care. Take the 90 degree right turn at this junction, signposted Guiting Power / Winchcombe (not the very sharp right turn back into Naunton). Follow this lane down-hill for half a mile, to a blind T-junction. Exit rightward with care, follow the lane to Guiting Grange and turn left into the village. Approaching from the South via Northleach/Bourton-on-the-Water Approaching Bourton-on-the-Water from the South, the A429 (Fosse Way) descends a long hill. At the bottom of the hill the A436 joins from the left by a garage. Just beyond this there is a right turn (into Bourton-on-the-Water), and - a few yards further - a left turn signposted Naunton. Take this lane which, after 2 miles, brings you to a halt at a crossroads with the B4068. Turn left onto the B4068, onto the route described from Stow-on-the-Wold. Follow the B4068 down into, and up out of, the Windrush valley (Naunton on your right). Pass the Naunton Down Golf Course on your left, and take the right turn at the difficult junction beyond, as described above. Approaching from the West via Winchcombe The road to Guiting from Winchcombe is an extremely attractive road through five miles of farmland and woods. In Winchombe look for Castle Street, a narrow and inconspicuous entrance turning off the main road, next to the Olde Bakery Tea Shoppe a few doors from Lloyds Bank near the town market place. This narrow entrance, down the side of the Tea Shoppe, is signposed Guiting Power. It soon widens into somthing more promising and is the start of the attractive country road to Guiting. Pass an entrance to Sudely Castle on your right (not the entrance signposted from Winchombe market place) and ascend a winding hill. Follow the road behind through attractive countryside. On reaching Guiting Power the "Hollow Bottom" Inn will appear on your left, with the Chapel a few yards beyond. Approaching from the North West via Toddington/Stanway The North West (Evesham or Tewkesbury direction) the easiest approach is via the B4077. After passing through the villages of Toddington and Standway, the road winds uphill for two miles through woods before arriving on top of the Cotswold edge. The road dips slightly and rises again, before starting a steeper descent to the village of Ford. Slow down for this descent, because part way down you need to take a right turn signposted Guiting Power/Kineton. Follow this lane for three miles, skirting the village of Temple Guiting on your left, and then passing through the hamlets of Kineton and Barton (blind bends here). Half a mile beyond Barton the Lodge and gates of Guiting Grange appear on your left, and opposite them a right turn into Guiting Power.
Chapel visitors are very welcome to park on the opposite side of the road where there is road-side parking for a number of cars. |
